On Tuesday, around 1,000 irate Umuahia citizens stormed the Enugu Electricity Power Distribution Company (EEDC) office on Bende Road in protest of the company’s exorbitant electricity prices.

In order to urge Governor Alex Otti to step in and address the “crazy bills” issue, they also marched to the Abia State Government House in Umuahia.

The demonstrators, who claimed to be from various locations within the capital of Abia State, expressed dissatisfaction over electricity bills for September 2025 that were more than 400% more than those for the previous month.

In comparison to the N10,000–N12,000 they paid last month, they claim that each apartment was invoiced between N40,000 and N60,000 or more, including areas without power.

The Umuahia electricity users, who held placards and chanted songs of mourning, pledged not to pay the new bills and accused EEDC of trying to eradicate them.

I received a charge for N12,000 last month, but this month I received N45,000. Where can a small business owner like me find the funds to cover these expenses? Mr. Kelechi Anamekwe, who lives on Enugu Road in Umuahia, said.

Activities at EEDC were interrupted by the demonstration, as employees fled below when they noticed a sizable mob swarming into their building.

The nonviolent demonstrators marched from the EEDC office on Bende Road to the Abia State Government House in Umuahia, where a high-ranking government official spoke to them.
