This development follows the signing of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 by President Bola Tinubu on July 29. The law sets the national minimum wage at ₦70,000, paving the way for adjustments in various sectors, including the NYSC.

According to Caroline Embu, NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, the approval was confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024. The letter, signed by Chairman Ekpo Nta, aligns with the amended minimum wage law.

The increase is a welcome development for corps members, who have been receiving the previous allowance since the 2019 minimum wage review. NYSC Director-General Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed had advocated for enhanced welfare packages during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s Chairman.

Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, noting that the increased allowance will bring much-needed relief to corps members. He also emphasized its potential to boost morale and motivate members to serve the nation more effectively.

The allowance increase takes effect from July 2024, benefiting thousands of youth participating in the NYSC program annually. This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting young Nigerians and recognizing their contributions to national development through the NYSC.

With this development, corps members can expect improved financial support during their service year, enabling them to focus on their assignments and community engagement without undue financial burdens.
