With Nigeria Football Federation NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen acting on interim basis; the Super Eagles has won two of its last three 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
The three-time African champions earlier on Friday defeated the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in Uyo.
It was a keenly contested game, with Nigeria keeping much of the possessions.
The three takeaways from the Super Eagles game are as follows:
1. Nigeria’s difficult in converting chances:
Nigeria players despite dominating their visitors and creating a lot of goal-scoring chances; found it difficult to score goals. Midfielder Alexander Iwobi and forward Victor Boniface were wasteful in front of goal, with Iwobi ballooning most of the chances.
Coach Augustine Eguavoen will have to work on this challenge of they must qualify for the AFCON and the 2026 FIFA world cup.
2. The tactical substitutions of Coach Eguavoen
With the Knights keeping Nigeria at bay, coach Eguavoen read the game and made some tactical substitutions. Introducing midfielders Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika and forward Taiwo Awoniyi. Those changes was the catalyst to the decisive goal scored late in the game by Fisayo.
The ability to read games and make effective changes is one of the characteristics of a good manager.
3. Nigeria now top of table with seven points
The Super Eagles of Nigeria with accumulated seven points from a possible nine, are now top of their Group table. And a victory against Libya next week in Benghazi will secure the 2025 AFCON ticket for Nigeria.
