Organizers of the protest say they aim to expose what they described as the rampant corruption and inadequacies within Nigeria’s government, led by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The protest originates from allegations of “blatant daylight rigging” during the recent Edo governorship election, which protesters claim has undermined the democratic will of the people.
According to the organizers, the election was manipulated to favour APC’s candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and “we are determined to bring international attention to what they see as an unjust act.”
A spokesperson for the movement expressed the collective outrage felt by those involved, stating:
“We refuse to allow this injustice to be swept under the carpet. The stolen mandate rightfully belongs to the people, and until it is returned, we will continue to raise our voices in protest.”
The protestors stated that their fight transcends this single election, adding that it is about defending the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that future elections are free, fair, and credible.
The organizers have pledged to continue informing the world about the alleged electoral malpractice, demanding justice and the restoration of what they believe is the true electoral mandate of the people of Edo State.
“We hope to galvanize global support and pressure Nigerian authorities into addressing our grievances and rectifying this obvious wrongdoing,” the statement concluded.
