Senate on Tuesday summoned the Director General of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Buba Marwa over alleged recovery of consignment of drugs from Sen Oyetola Ashiru’s house.
NDLEA had in a statement claimed that it raided the Ilorin home of Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru where it recovered a consignment of drugs.
But Senate at the resumption of plenary session after closed door meeting which lasted for two hours allowed Senator Ashiru to come under point of order in which he raised the issue in the Senate’s chamber.
Coming under point of order, Senator Ashiru said the NDLEA has made unfounded allegations against him and that these allegations are malicious which is an attempt to undermine his credibility as a senator and impede his ability to freely participate in parliamentary debates.
He explained further that the NDLEA made the allegation against him following his contributions on a bill seeking to establish “an institute for drugs awareness and rehabilitation” that was tabled for debates on the floor of this chamber on October 15th, 2024 to which he offered his views on the subject as best known to him.
He added that rather than the NDLEA to address the issues raised by the Senate, the agency resorted to subterfuge and gas-lighting.
After his submission, President of the Senate, Senator God’swill Akpabio expressed dissatisfaction with the statement credited to NDLEA in the media.
Senate therefore approved request of Senator Ashiru for the NDLEA boss to appear before the Senate ad hoc Committee chaired by Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe.
Other members of the ad hoc committee are Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Kaka Shehu, Senator Shuaib Afolabi , Senator Ede Dafinone, Senator Lawan Usman.
The committee is expected to submit its report within one week.
