In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Mohit Saxena- Consultant and HOD Medical oncology, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram listed the major symptoms of pancreatic cancer and how jaundice can be a sign of this cancer.

Factors that can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer

Smoking
Diabetes
Family history of cancer and genetics
Obesity
Age factor
Consuming alcohol on a regular basis

Link Between Jaundice And Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer can form in different parts of the gland. The formation of a tumour in the wider part, which is closest to the bile duct, is more likely to cause jaundice as the first sign of pancreatic cancer. Jaundice is a condition that causes eyes, skin, and other tissues to turn yellow. The yellowing is due to an elevated level of a component called bilirubin, which builds up in the blood because of obstruction caused by a tumour preventing its release in gut. Often overlooked as a symptom of pancreatic cancer, it is essential to create awareness regarding jaundice signs linked to pancreatic cancer.

Symptoms Of Pancreatic Cancer

Jaundice

Even though not everyone suffering from pancreatic cancer develops jaundice as a first sign but usually can’t be ignored. Yellowing of skin and white part of eyes, dark yellow urine, pale stools, or itchy skin are a few of its symptoms.

Weight Loss

Unexplained or sudden weight loss could be a sign of pancreatic cancer and should not be ignored.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Issues related to the abdomen like indigestion, loss of appetite, feeling nauseous, and vomiting could be the signs of an underlying condition. It should be considered if it persists and worsens over time.
