This move is aimed at significantly reducing maternal mortality rates and ensure safer deliveries for women.

A post made by the ministry on it’s X platform disclosed that the minister announced this at the second day of the ongoing Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review.

It quoted the minister as saying that, “No woman should lose her life simply because she can’t afford a C-section.”

It disclosed that the minister made the pronunciation after he launched the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative (MAMII), a groundbreaking effort by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare aimed at tackling Nigeria’s critical maternal and neonatal mortality rates—among the highest globally.

The post also disclosed that major partners are also committed to ensuring that the initiative becomes a success.

The post reads, “In a powerful move, Coordinating Minister Muhammad Pate just announced that Cesarean Sections for all Nigerian women who need them will now be free.

“No woman should lose her life simply because she can’t afford a C-section.

“Through #MAMII, access to affordable, quality healthcare for mothers and newborns will be prioritized, focusing on primary health services and community involvement.

“Major commitments came from key partners: HRH Dr. Haliru Yahaya, Emir of Shonga – Traditional institutions and communities are at the heart of health reforms. We’re fully in!”
