According to a check by THE WHISTLER, one kilogramme of gas at a major gas distributing centre costs N1500 while roadside retailers sell the same kilogramme of gas for N1600

The check further revealed that long queues have resurfaced in many of the gas stations while many had no products to dispense of.

Some of the residents who spoke to The Whistler expressed dismay over the fluctuation in the prices of cooking gas saying the prices had been unstable and fluctuating for months

‘Previously, I was buying a kilogramme of gas for N1200, later it was N1400 and now it is N1600, the price has continued to increase,” said 25-year-old housewife Ekaette Akpan.

“Yesterday, I was asked to drop my cylinder and come back later due to the queue, I could not even be asked to make payment, I was told to come back later, ” she said.

Similarly, the cost of a gas cylinder has skyrocketed within a couple of months with the least being sold for N16, 000, an investigation has shown.

According a resident, a few years ago, an 8kg of cylinder was sold for N6, 500

“I left the 6kg in Calabar, and on getting to Uyo, I got the fancy 12.5kg cylinder for 14k, which is now sold for 55-60k.

” About 3 years ago, I had the urge to buy the 3kg just for augmentation but kept postponing it. I think at that time it was 6-7k.

“Guess what? I just bought a 3kg cylinder at 22k, and this was even because it was an old stock.

“The current price of this cylinder is 24-25k” she lamented

In Akwa Ibom State, the use of cooking gas gained traction a few years ago when the price of kerosene became unaffordable.

Many fear that with the high cost of both the cooking gas and cylinders, the return to the use of firewood for domestic use may be around the corner.
