This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,”resonates deeply with the mission to foster inclusion, celebrate achievements, and advocate for equal opportunities for persons with disabilities in all spheres of life.
In a statement Bankole personally signed on Tuesday, it said Nigeria has made significant strides in advancing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
According to him, enacting the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 marked a turning point in the country’s commitment to creating an inclusive society.
“To date, several states have domesticated the Act, demonstrating their commitment to upholding the rights of PWDs. However, we urge the remaining states to urgently adopt and implement this critical legislation to ensure that no Nigerian with a disability is left behind.
“The APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has continued to champion policies that prioritize inclusion and accessibility. Through initiatives that promote social protection, employment opportunities, and accessibility in public infrastructure, the government has shown dedication to empowering PWDs.
“Similarly, the APC National Working Committee (NWC), under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has made inclusion a core focus. The establishment of structures that ensure representation and active participation of PWDs within the party highlights the APC’s commitment to inclusive leadership.”
Speaking on personal contributions, the National leader said, “As part of efforts to alleviate the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, I have initiated and implemented structured social welfare programs to improve their quality of life.
“Through grants, scholarships for PWD students and children of PWDs, medical interventions, and other targeted support initiatives, I have sought to provide tangible solutions to the daily struggles faced by many in this community. These programs alleviate immediate needs and empower PWDs and their families to pursue education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, fostering long-term inclusion and independence.”
Tolu Bankole appealed to governments at all levels, private sector leaders, and civil society to take decisive steps to empower persons with disabilities.
“Governments and organizations must create pathways for PWDs to assume leadership roles in public and private sectors. Amplifying their voices in decision-making processes ensures that policies reflect their needs and aspirations.
“Implementation of the Disability Act: States yet to domesticate the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act, 2018 must act swiftly to uphold the rights of PWDs and promote inclusion within their jurisdictions.
“Targeted programs should be introduced to enhance the economic inclusion of PWDs. These initiatives should include access to entrepreneurship opportunities, skills development, and employment tailored to their unique capabilities.
“Comprehensive audits and modifications to public infrastructure are necessary to ensure accessibility for all”.
