While the 25-year-old woman was walking into her apartment building, a man dressed in dark clothing came in behind her, according to the surveillance video obtained by ABC affiliate WABC.

She walked up a few steps towards the mailboxes while the man pressed the button for the elevator and paced across the floor.

In a few quick seconds, the man starts to walk up the stairs and wraps his arms around the woman from behind.

She tries to remove his arms from her neck and is also able to kick the man while she struggles.

The woman told police she yelled “Help” and told the man to stop.

He told her to “Shut up” and then quickly let her go and walked out of the building like nothing happened.

The woman was not physically hurt during the incident, according to the outlet.

She also refused medical attention the New York Police Department told The U.S. Sun.

NYPD told The U.S. Sun the man had a dark complexion.

Police are still searching for the male suspect and ask the public to call their Crime Stoppers Hotline with any information.

Neighbors were shocked when the video was released to the public.

“It’s crazy because he was literally like five feet behind her in the picture that I saw,” a scared neighbor told the outlet.

“I was honestly really nervous and scared because I tend to walk my dog at the same time. It makes me think twice about the way I move around the neighborhood and just in general.”

Another neighbor said a lot of “weird things” have happened in the building and Brooklyn neighborhood.

He also told WABC he had been followed into the building in the past as well and has since bought a door camera because he feels unsafe.

Despite New York’s efforts to reduce crime, it has taken a while to see major changes.

Statistics showed crime has skyrocketed since the pandemic affecting both 2021 and 2022 with increasingly high numbers, per Daily Mail.

However, statistics released in August showed crime in July 2024 has decreased immensely for the seventh month in a row, per the NYPD.

In July, there was a decrease of 4.2 percent compared to the previous year.

Crime in the subway also fell to its lowest level in 15 years for the sixth month with a 19.7 percent decrease.

“These remarkable, ongoing decreases in crime and violence, month after month, are the dividends earned from tireless efforts coupled with strategic planning and deployment,” said Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban.

“NYPD officers dutifully patrol the many neighborhoods of our great city every day, disrupting and preventing criminal activity.

“They do this because they have the support of the people we serve—New Yorkers who actively embrace the concept of public safety as a shared responsibility.

“I know that our collective successes will carry us through the remaining summer months and further steel our resolve to always keep every community safe.”
