Currently, Bello is in custody at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja, where he faces a 19-count charge of money laundering involving N80 billion.
Despite Bello’s media team asserting that the former governor had chosen to cooperate with the EFCC after consulting with family, legal advisers, and political associates, the EFCC has clarified that Bello had been evading court appearances since the case began at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in April 2024.
A reliable source from the commission disclosed that operatives had trailed and apprehended Bello early in the morning, contradicting his earlier statements.
Bello’s media office had released a statement on Wednesday claiming that his decision to “honour” the EFCC’s invitation was in line with his commitment to upholding his fundamental human rights and ensuring that due process was followed.
However, the EFCC insists that the former governor was apprehended, not voluntarily surrendered.
