A memo signed by the Permanent Secretary, Nasir Gwarzo, highlighted the rising concerns over cruel physical assaults among students and emphasized that such behavior would no longer be tolerated. The ministry’s intervention came after the circulation of a disturbing video on social media showing a group of students physically assaulting a fellow student, which led to the suspension of 13 students from the Federal Government College in Enugu on November 7, 2024. These students were suspended for six weeks as part of an ongoing investigation into the bullying incident.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, ordered the immediate suspension to allow a thorough investigation into the incident. This action is part of a broader response to the growing issue of bullying and student violence in both public and private schools across the country.

To address the escalating issue of student-on-student violence, the ministry has now made it clear that, in addition to existing disciplinary measures, any student or group of students involved in physical assault leading to injury will face indefinite suspension. School administrators have been instructed to strictly enforce this new directive and ensure that both parents and the Student-Based Management Committee (SBMC) are fully informed.
