Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has finally addressed the long-standing rumours about his alleged Igbo heritage, stating that such claims only amuse him. The remarks were made on Thursday when Obasanjo received the leadership of the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, a coalition representing major markets in Lagos State.

The meeting took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, according to a statement released on Friday by Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media.

Over the years, some individuals have speculated that Obasanjo’s father hailed from Anambra State, a claim the former president has largely avoided addressing until now. “It just makes me laugh,” he commented when asked about the allegations.

During the meeting, Obasanjo also discussed the proposed establishment of the Owerri Central Market, which is poised to become a significant commercial hub in the country. He noted that the idea of such a market has been considered since Imo State’s inception but has yet to come to fruition. “I’m pleased that the project is being revived, and I hope this time it will become a reality. It’s going to be a large-scale, first-of-its-kind market,” Obasanjo said, expressing his willingness to support the initiative.

He commended the Imo State governor for showing interest in the project and expressed confidence that the market would be a success. Obasanjo reiterated his stance on national unity, stating that no group should be driven out of any part of Nigeria. “We fought for the unity of this nation, not to push the Igbos away, but to bring them in. So, if anyone suggests that someone should leave a place, it is they who should leave,” he asserted.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Emeka Emmanuel read a letter signed by Chinedu Ukatu and Iwuchukwu Ezenwafor, highlighting the market’s potential as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. He urged Obasanjo to support the project, which could help reduce unemployment by providing opportunities for many Nigerians.

Emmanuel also sought Obasanjo’s assistance in helping their members secure loans to purchase spaces in the new market.
