It was alleged that the shooting was an attempt by some non-state actors to disrupt the burial of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the Senate.

The state command clarified that “security operatives mistook the police operatives as unfriendly forces and opened fire at them.”

The encounter, it was gathered, resulted in bullets hitting the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza Sedan carrying some men, razing down the vehicle in the process.

Two innocent passers-by were injured and taken to hospital, the police said.

The state police command, in a release by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, sued for calm to allow for investigations into the incident.

The command stated that, “The attack on the operatives was not from non-state actors or any attempt to disrupt the burial of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.”

Ikenga stated that preliminary information revealed that security operatives on investigation trailed a suspect to a security checkpoint before the gun duel ensued.

He said, “Joint Security Forces have been deployed to ensure Nnewi is calm throughout the burial ceremonies of the late senator.”

Ubah will be buried tomorrow in Nnewi.
