The PDP emphasized that Lagosians would resist any attempt to impose Seyi Tinubu, asserting that political power in the state is not an inheritance or a birthright.
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju also criticized the endorsement, calling it “laughable” and arguing that Lagos should not operate as a monarchy where leadership is passed down through family lines. He noted that such actions undermine democracy and disregard the will of the people.
The endorsement originated from groups like the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), which cited Seyi Tinubu’s philanthropic efforts and leadership potential as reasons for their support. Other groups, including Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) and the Middle Belt Youths, have echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his vision and dedication to societal advancement.
However, notable figures like Joe Igbokwe of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths have rejected the endorsement. They argued that the position of Lagos governor is not a role for the unprepared or imposed candidates and stressed the need for Lagos indigenes to reclaim leadership of the state.
The controversy continues to spark debates over the dynamics of power, democracy, and inclusivity in Lagos State.
