What you eat can drastically affect many aspects of your health, including your risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
The development of cancer, in particular, has been shown to be heavily influenced by your diet.
Here are some foods you need to limit or avoid to reduce your chances of getting cancer.
1. Red meat.
A high intake of red meat has been associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. The mechanisms for this increased risk have not been determined, but several factors have been suggested including heme content in the meat, animal fat, and carcinogens produced when the meat is cooked at high temperatures. It isn’t known if risk varies with different animal raising strategies (eg, grass-fed beef).
2. Sugar and refined carbohydrates
Eating a high concentration of sugary, starchy foods may put you at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity. According to a 2020 study both conditions promote inflammation and oxidative stress. This may increase your risk for certain types of cancer.
3. Salted fish (Chinese style)
Salting is a traditional method of preserving food — especially fish — frequently used in South-East Asia and China. This method of preserving unfortunately results in the production of carcinogenic by-products, meaning it can cause cancer in humans. Chinese-style salted fish is a Group 1 carcinogen, like processed meat.
Alternatives: Fresh fish or seafood such as prawns, mussels or squid.
4. Alcohol.
When the body metabolizes alcohol, it produces acetaldehyde, a chemical compound that may damage DNA, which may lead to cancer.
Research has found that the more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk for developing certain kinds of cancer, such as head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer.
5. Boxed Meals.
Boxed meals like macaroni and cheese and taco kits contain many of the same problem ingredients. Choose homemade versions of these comfort food meals instead.
6. Chicken Fried Steak
If fried chicken contributes to your cancer risk, chicken fried steak only makes it worse. The red meat used in this classic dish means it should be a special occasion option only.
