Onanuga highlighted that the decision to acquire the Airbus A330 was driven by significant maintenance and fuel cost savings, which amount to millions of dollars annually. He emphasized that the new jet was purchased at a price well below its market value, making it a cost-effective investment for Nigeria.

The move to replace the ageing Boeing B737-700(BBJ) was recommended by Nigeria’s parliament following an investigative hearing that raised concerns about the aircraft’s safety and cost efficiency. These concerns were heightened after the plane malfunctioned during a trip to Saudi Arabia. The Senate’s security and intelligence committee advised that the outdated aircraft be replaced to minimize downtime and operational expenses.

Onanuga also noted that the new Airbus A330 is more spacious and equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, a customized interior, and an advanced communications system, ensuring it meets the modern needs of the Nigerian presidency.
