The attack was “very intentional,” according to New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. She claimed that the man was attempting to run over as many people as he possibly could. The event started about 3:15 p.m. local time.

Although their names have not yet been verified, Kirkpatrick said the majority of the fatalities seemed to be locals. As investigations go, the number of fatalities and injuries may vary. The investigation has been turned over to the FBI. Although improvised explosive devices were found at the scene, FBI agent Althea Duncan stated that the shooting is not considered a terrorist assault.

The devices are being examined by authorities to assess their viability. Until further notice, Duncan advised the public to stay away from the area. Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana said he was shocked by the event and called it a “horrific act of violence.” He commended the first responders at the scene and offered his condolences to the victims. As authorities attempt to determine the attack’s motivation and guarantee public safety, the tragedy has left the city in shock.
