A coalition of youth leaders from the North-East has issued a seven-day ultimatum to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, demanding a probe into the activities of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
The group warned that it would embark on peaceful protests if the federal government fails to take action within the stated period.
The Coalition of Northeast Youth Group Leaders said the review of the NSA’s office was necessary to complete the ongoing security sector reforms initiated by the President.
According to the group, the removal of the Service Chiefs was a welcome development, but it insisted that the reform process would be incomplete without auditing the operations and structure of the NSA.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Mohammed Grema Adamu, the coalition praised the President’s decision to sack the Service Chiefs, describing it as a bold and historic move aimed at repositioning the military and restoring public confidence in the country’s security system.
“We commend President Tinubu for the courageous and decisive step of relieving the Service Chiefs of their duties. This bold action represents not just a routine administrative change but a historic milestone in the ongoing reform of Nigeria’s military leadership, a clear statement of intent against threats to the nation’s stability,” the group stated.
However, the youth leaders, emphasized that the effort to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture should include a full review of the NSA’s performance, structure, and coordination mechanisms.
They argued that such a step would promote accountability, transparency, and efficiency in handling national security matters.
“Our call is not punitive but a patriotic demand for reform, transparency, and institutional integrity,” the coalition added, noting that the NSA’s office must also be subjected to performance reviews to sustain public trust and operational effectiveness.
The group further urged the President to ensure closer collaboration between the government and civil society organisations, especially in the North-East, to make the reform process more inclusive and effective.
It stressed that the President’s ongoing reforms have given Nigerians renewed hope, but warned that silence or inaction regarding the NSA’s office would raise doubts about the government’s commitment to total security overhaul.
“Mr President has shown courage, resolve, and leadership in this delicate period of our national life. Nigerians now look to him to consolidate these efforts, cleanse the system of inefficiency, and rebuild our national security apparatus on the pillars of trust, professionalism, and constitutional loyalty,” the statement read.
The coalition concluded with a warning that if there is no tangible response from the government within seven days, youths across the North-East will stage peaceful demonstrations to demand accountability and good governance.
